What Is Zolpidem?
Zolpidem tartrate is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic belonging to the imidazopyridine class. Like Zopiclone, it acts on GABA-A receptors but with greater selectivity for certain receptor subtypes. It is a prescription-only medicine in the UK.
How Does Zolpidem Work?
Zolpidem selectively binds to the omega-1 subunit of the GABA-A receptor. This selectivity produces hypnotic effects with less muscle relaxation compared to benzodiazepines. Its fast onset (15-30 minutes) is due to rapid absorption.
